VIENTIANE, Dec 6 (Xinhua): Laos has conducted 80,188 Covid-19 tests, with 39 positive cases, according to the Lao Ministry of Health.
Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control under Lao Ministry of Health, Sisavath Soutthaniraxay, told a press conference in Lao capital Vientiane that Laos has been carrying out tests every day for Covid-19 since January, with the total number of tests reaching 80,188.
There were also worries that there may be a new outbreak in the country after several near scares, said experts.
Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith had earlier underlined the need for multilateral cooperation in developing Covid-19 vaccines and providing them at an affordable price, during an address to the United Nations.
Speaking at the recent Special Session of the UN General Assembly in Response to Coronavirus Disease Pandemic, Thongloun called for the international community to support COVAX – an initiative working for global equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines.
This is to make the Covid-19 vaccine ‘a global public goods’, the prime minister said, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The premier made the comment as several companies and research bodies have announced initial success in developing Covid-19 vaccines, which are expected to become available in the near future.
Among the people tested in Laos, 39 were tested positive and 26 of the patients have been discharged from hospitals after treatment.
Another 13 infected cases are treated in designated hospitals, Mittaphab Hospital (Hospital 150) in Lao capital Vientiane.
Authorities and people countrywide must continue implementing preventive measures, said Sisavath.
