BEIJING, Oct 3 (China Daily/ANN): The number of internet users in China had reached 940 million as of June, accounting for one-fifth of the world's total, according to a report on China's internet development released this week.
The internet penetration rate in China reached 67 per cent, about 5 percentage points higher than the global average, said the report issued by the China Internet Network Information Center.
Residents in 98 per cent of China's poor villages had access to the internet through fiber-optic cables, said the report, noting that the urban-rural digital gap had been significantly narrowed.
Internet services such as online education, medical consultation and remote-office facilities have great development potential due to the influence of the Covid-19 epidemic, said the report, adding that the number of online-education users now exceeds 380 million.
In another development, it was also announced that more than half of China's internet start-up businesses were set up by women, Chinese President Xi Jinping had aid on Thursday (Oct 1) at a high-level meeting on the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
China's e-commerce logistics sector also reported continued growth in September with increases in a raft of vitality indicators, according to an industry survey jointly conducted by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing and e-commerce giant JD.com.
The index tracking e-commerce logistics activities rose to 110.4 points last month, up from 109.2 points in August and hitting a new high this year, showed the survey.
The total demand for e-commerce logistics rose steadily, with a sub-index tracking the total business volume coming in at 126.8 points, up 2.1 points from the previous month.
Demand for e-commerce in rural areas maintained its growth momentum, with a sub-index tracking e-commerce logistics in rural areas standing at 122.9 points, up 2.7 points over August. - China Daily/Asian News Network
