DHL Express Malaysia launches durian express exports to HK, Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama): Durian business owners can now take advantage of exporting the king of fruits abroad, particularly to Hong Kong and Singapore through DHL Express Malaysia's Durian Express initiative.

In a statement, the international delivery service provider said it aims to help durian business owners meet the overseas demand spike, which guarantees next-day delivery in less than 24 hours.

"The service also demonstrates our longstanding commitment to the Malaysian small and medium enterprise community, as we continue to help them look beyond our shores and realise their growth potential,” said DHL Express Malaysia managing director Julian Neo.

With Durian Express, business owners have the flexibility of making shipments to their own overseas warehouses, commercial entities like greengrocers and supermarkets, or residential and office addresses.

Break bulk is also available for large-volume orders that can be divided into smaller consignments and individually dispatched to separate locations

Neo also said the two countries are Malaysia’s main trading partners for the king of fruits, and according to the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry, homegrown yield exceeded approximately 341,000 tonnes in 2018.

Despite this, only 6.8 percent were destined for export. The new service will allow local durian business owners to tap into a soaring foreign appetite for the more than 100 varieties found here, especially the much-coveted Musang King.

Also known as Mao Shan Wang or D197, its bittersweet and creamy flesh fetches a premium outside these borders. While one kilogramme of the crowd favourite sells for between RM50 and RM70 domestically, the same amount retails for up to RM200 in Hong Kong.

The rising prices and similarly high demand has made it a key focus of export for the Malaysian government, accounting for 23 per cent of the annual durian production. - Bernama
