Mount Anak Krakatau continues erupting, Indonesia urges vigilance

JAKARTA: Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia's South Lampung regency continued erupting Saturday morning, with booming and rumbling sounds heard from a nearby volcano observation post, authorities said.

The eruption began at 11:07 p.m. local time Friday, with lava fountains observed between midnight and 6 a.m. Saturday. The volcano remains at Level III, or Alert status, with authorities imposing a three-kilometer exclusion zone around its active crater.

Indonesia's Geological Agency said the volcano's structure, rebuilt following its 2018 eruption, remains relatively small and is currently not considered capable of collapsing on a scale that could trigger a tsunami.

"People do not need to panic, but they must remain vigilant," the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said in a statement.

Authorities urged residents and tourists not to enter the restricted area or approach the volcano to watch or record the eruption. People in coastal areas of Banten and Lampung were also advised to follow official updates from the Geological Agency, BNPB and local authorities rather than unverified information.
