Laos sees drop in traffic fatalities during New Year celebrations


VIENTIANE: Road accidents claimed 26 lives across Laos during the 2025 Lao New Year celebrations from April 11 to 17, a decrease from the 33 fatalities reported during the same period last year.

A total of 313 accidents were recorded across the country during the cited period, deputy head of the traffic police department under the Lao Ministry of Public Security, Keomala Sengthong, told a press conference on Friday (April 18).

Meanwhile, 521 people were injured and 538 vehicles damaged in the road accidents. Champasak province reported the highest number of accidents with 40, followed by Vientiane province with 38, and Lao capital Vientiane with 35.

Keomala said the main causes of the road accidents were drunk driving and speeding.

During the 2024 Lao New Year celebrations, Laos reported 316 road accidents nationwide, resulting in 594 injuries, 33 fatalities, and 567 damaged vehicles. - Xinhua
