For four-time world champion Lin Dan of China, a long break from competition to be with his family has been worth it.
Now refreshed, he is back to resume an important business – to win the world title for the fifth time.
Yesterday, Lin Dan declared that he was ready to be the ‘numero uno’ in the World Championships starting today at the Tianhe Gymnasium and has promised to flex his muscles and wow the crowd.
And Lin Dan, who will turn 30 in October, has assured his fans – that he has no plans to retire no matter how his campaign ends.
Despite missing in action since beating world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in outstanding fashion at the London Olympic Games in August last year, he still looked ruthless, muscular and super fit during a practice session yesterday.
Lin Dan said that he disappeared to spend time with his wife Xie Xingfang and his family and away from the hectic life as a shuttler.
“I have been playing badminton and travelling for 12 years and I felt that the time was right (after defending his Olympic singles title) to spend more time with my family. It was worthwhile and I cherished every moment of it,” said Lin Dan.
“Right now, I am grateful to the BWF (Badminton World Federation) for giving me the wild card to compete.”
“This is a beginning for me again (playing competitive badminton). As an athlete, I cannot guarantee winning all the time but I can promise that I will give my best. Let me reaffirm that I have no plans to retire ... no plans at all,” he stressed with such conviction that some of the Chinese media clapped their hands.
Even after being crowned world champion four times and nicking the Olympic gold medal twice, which makes him the greatest player ever, Lin Dan said that he is looking for more “magical” moments.
“I have come prepared to win the world title again. Every player wants to give their best in the World Championships.
“I may be one of the oldest player now but I have trained with younger players in Qingdao with the same intensity ... what matters most is the attitude in training. I am happy with my condition,” he said.
