PETALING JAYA: Swift response by the police resulted in the arrest of four robbers who made away with a lecturer’s handbag at a hotel in Mutiara Damansara here.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din said the victim, a 36-year-old lecturer at an Australian university, was at the hotel lobby when she was ambushed by the group at about 12.10pm Sunday.
“She was looking at some products on display when the suspects took off with her bag, injuring her wrist in the process. They rode away from the scene on motorcycles,” he said.
ACP Zani said policemen on crime patrol, upon receiving the alert, chased the suspects all the way to a condominium complex in Kota Damansara.
“They arrested one man at about 1pm. Another three suspects were apprehended at the complex from 2.30pm onwards.
“We are still tracking down one more suspect,” he added.
ACP Zani said police recovered the stolen handbag, which contained a smartphone, a tablet computer, sunglasses, identity cards and money amounting to RM 500.
According to him, the suspects were aged between 20 and 33.
“They mostly operate in Damansara and Sri Damansara. We believe that they were responsible for five cases in the district.
“However, we are liaising with our counterparts to check if the group also committed crimes in other districts,” he related.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing hurt.
In an unrelated case, police arrested four suspects including a 16-year-old teenager for stealing motorcycles around Taman Medan and Sri Manja.
ACP Zani said a team raided a house in Taman Medan on Oct 2 and apprehended the suspects aged between 16 and 31.
“They recovered six stolen motorcycles and a motorcycle engine,” he added.
In another case, police nabbed a 38-year-old serial snatch thief in Seapark.
The suspect, who has three previous records for the same offence, preyed on victims at Seapark residential areas.
