Police threatened to rape me and sell video, says May 1 rally detainee

PETALING JAYA: A female youth detained over the May 1 anti-GST rally claims to have been threatened with rape and public humiliation by a police officer in order to get her to cooperate.

Maisara Amira, who says she was threatened at the Dang Wangi police headquarters, shared her experience at the Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower) office here on Tuesday.

“The words he said were this: ‘You want me to rape you? In this room, only you and I are here. In this room, there is a camera and microphone. So if I sell the video, I can be rich.’ I was threatened that way,” said the 21-year-old.

Maisara, who was remanded for four days, was allegedly threatened by the officer while being questioned on May 5, mere hours before her release.

The perpetrator was not in uniform and did not have any identification on him.

The following attempt at intimidation was also issued after the first threat and attempt to obtain information and cooperation from Maisara, who had remained silent at the time.

“He tried again and said ‘This way lah. I’m going to give you a chance. You answer all the questions given by the female officer. If not, I will ask her to get out. I will enter the room. And you settle with me,” she added.

Also at the press conference on Tuesday were her father, Mohamad Asmadi Mohamad Safari, and her legal counsel from Lawyers for Liberty, Sivamalar Genapathy and Mohd Faizal Abdul Rahman.

Her lawyers have demanded an independent probe into the matter, and said police have 48 hours to allow investigations into the rape threat to proceed at the Petaling Jaya headquarters instead of insisting it be conducted at the site of the offence.

Empower executive director Maria Chin Abdullah called for retraining of the police, as women groups had already lobbied the police to re-evaluate the way they handle their investigations.

Police were also previously trained by women’s groups on how to deal with rape cases.

“They should be able to understand that if you give a rape threat like this, you should know the impact on the person.”

“In this case, they used sexual harassment and rape threats to extract information from detainees. The police always say they are there to defend violence against women. Yet they themselves are perpetuating violence against women,” said Empower executive director Maria Chin Abdullah.

The press conference was called after Maisara made a police report at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters on Friday.

She was the only female detainee among 23 youths arrested over the recent May 1 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

In another online call for action, a petition urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to investigate and charge the policeman for the rape threat.

The petition, mooted by Jason S. Ganesan, said Malaysians should urge for the policeman to be brought to justice and terminated from his post for the vile act undertaken in his course of duty.

“Rape threats should under no circumstances be allowed to be part of PDRM’s operating procedure when conducting investigations,” it added.
