GOPENG: Firemen have successfully put out the bush fire on Gunung Tempurung near the Sungai Siput Selatan new village in Kampar, about 2km from here.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said on Wednesday the bush fire, which was reported last Friday, was completely doused after it rained in the area on Tuesday night.

"Initial investigations show that the fire was a result of the current dry spell and also lightning strike," he told reporters at a popular tourist spot Gua Tempurung, which has been affected by bad press as a result of the bush fire.

Dr Zambry said inaccurate media reports had caused tourists to cancel or postpone their visit to the limestone cave attraction.

"Certain reports had implied that Gua Tempurung was also on fire whereas the area on fire is 2km away from here.

"No doubt, Gua Tempurung is part of Gunung Tempurung but it is a mountain range spread over a significant area and distance," he added.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Yahaya Madis said firemen would continue to monitor the area to avoid any recurrence of fire.
