Added sugar is the problem

REFERRING to the letter, “Sugar is not the sole culprit” (The Star, Dec 8), thank you, Dr Ahmad, for explaining more thoroughly the two types of diabetes and also the different causes of diabetes like inheritance, age, gender, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.

No healthcare professional worth his or her salt will look at health in a compartmentalised manner but in a holistic manner, knowing full well that any disease of one part of the body is a disease of the whole body. There should be no surprise that dentists and the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA) are greatly concerned over excessive sugar consumption because it is a major cause of early childhood caries and greatly impacts oral health and overall health in both children and adults.
