Fishing boat owner freed by Filipino abductors

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian fishing boat owner-cum-skipper, who was kidnapped in the waters off Semporna on Sept 27, has been released by his Filipino abductors.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun (pic) confirmed that Ruslan Saripin, 39, returned to Lahad Datu at about 7am Saturday.

He said police were recording the statement of Ruslan at the Lahad Datu police station.

However, he did not disclose immediate details on the events leading to the quick release of the hostage.

Ruslan, a local Suluk from Lahad Datu, was taken from his boat while fishing in waters off Pulau Gaya in Semporna at around 10.50pm by gunmen who also robbed his crew.

Later, the gunmen also robbed a second fishing boat crew in Tungku waters off Lahad Datu.
