Adenan proposes April 30 for Sarawak elections

KUCHING: Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem has unexpectedly announced that April 18 will possibly be the nomination day and April 30 the polling day for the 11th Sarawak state election.

Adenan was addressing a pre-election seminar for PBB’s Satok branch at a seaside resort here at about 9pm yesterday when he made the announcement.

“I have already met the Election Commission (EC) and decided to set April 18 as nomination day and polling day on April 30,” he reportedly said at the seminar, speaking in Bahasa Malaysia.

Adenan told the attendees to get ready for the election.

Adenan did not announce the dissolution of the state assembly.

Previously, Adenan had hinted that the 11th Sarawak election might be held early this year.

He said a number of factors were taken into consideration on this, including the date of tabling of the federal and state budgets and the monsoon season.

The current term of the state assembly ends on June 20.

The last state election was held in 2011, which saw Barisan Nasional retaining its two-thirds majority in the state assembly.
