China's huge interest in durians worrying, say farmers


The huge interest in acquiring durian farms by Chinese businessmen are worrying local farmers. As the Musang King durian gets popular in China in recent years, many businessmen have expressed interest to acquire durian orchards in Malaysia. Local farmers and traders are worried that their plans to dominate the industry through planting, harvesting and exporting of the king of fruits to China could result in fierce competition. This could also affect the price of other local durian varieties. It said that the Chinese owned about 121ha of durian orchards in Malaysia currently, through local collaboration.
