For jet-setters, here’s a way to eat at a fancy restaurant before or after your fly.
Two top-ranked chefs in the US are the latest to head to the airports and bring their cuisine to jet-set travelers in an ongoing trend that's seeing stars of the food world open kitchens in international transport hubs.
American Express announced it had tapped chef Christopher Kostow of the triple Michelin-starred dining destination The Restaurant at Meadowood to helm the kitchens at The Centurion Lounge in San Francisco, where American Express card holders can sample Napa Valley cuisine before boarding their flight.
Chef Cedric Vongerichten, son of renowned chef Jean Georges Vongerichten, has also been tapped to develop the menu at The Centurion Lounge at LaGuardia International Airport in New York.
Vongerichten is the executive chef of Perry St in New York and was named by Zagat as one of the top 30 up-and-coming chefs under 30 in 2011.
Other Centurion Lounge partners include Scott Conant and mixologist Jim Meehan.
At the San Francisco International Airport, Kostow will join celebrity TV chef Cat Cora, who opened Cat Cora's Kitchen, while Vongerichten will also be competing for diners at LaGuardia against celebrity chefs like Andrew Carmellini, Aaron Sanchez and Anne Burrell, all of whom have outposts at the New York airport as well.
Elsewhere in the world, Canadian celebrity chefs Susur Lee and Lynn Crawford will be lending their star power to Toronto Pearson International Airport this year, while Gordon Ramsay has an outpost at Heathrow Airport, Jamie Oliver is at Gatwick, and most recently, Heston Blumenthal opened a cafe and restaurant at Heathrow as well.
