THOSE looking for a hearty, well-prepared meal should stop by Food Lover Cafe, located at Happy Mansion in Petaling Jaya.
This family-oriented cafe has several food and beverages items on its menu. There is also a set lunch menu that is rotated monthly.
Although the cafe specialises in Western cuisine, there are also local options such as nasi lemak and curry mee.
The cafe uses fresh ingredients and prepare everything from scratch. Dishes to look out for are their Cream of Mushroom Soup served with Garlic Bread as well as Mushroom Bruschetta. The bread is soft in the middle but crunchy, while the soup contains generous mouthfuls of fresh button mushrooms and is creamy but not overpoweringly so.
“All our sauces and soups are homemade. We use quality ingredients which is cooked on-the-spot,” said Raymond Hoo, the proprietor of this pork-free joint.
After having been in Ireland for 13 years as a chef in Chinese cuisine, Hoo returned home with the intention of opening a little cafe alongside his sister Kelly Chong.
He roped in his best friend, Sally Koong, who originally worked in Castell Restaurant and Bar.
Hoo particularly recommends the Grilled Chicken Chop because “the chicken is always fresh from the market and that is why people say it is juicier.”
The dish does not disappoint as the chicken chop is succulent with crisp, peppery skin accompanied by caramelised onion sauce with a side of buttery mash, balanced with the clean flavours of the homemade coleslaw.
Hoo originally hails from Bidor, a town renowned for its duck mee. It is no wonder why Food Lover’s Smoked Duck Spaghetti comes highly recommended. For those who enjoy a little spice in their pasta, the dish does not fall short with its tender and thick slices of smoked duck breast atop the pasta that is sprinkled with chilli flakes.
Of course, you will have to save some room for the huge assortment of cakes. The fluffy-yet-substantial Simply Italian is reminiscent of tiramisu but with fresh cream. You could also try one of their homemade cakes with new varieties every three to four months
The cafe also serves a range of freshly squeezed juices, fruit smoothies and Italian Venezia Oro beans for hot coffee, along with other somewhat unusual ice blended coffees.
