SHAH ALAM: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil believes that the future will see telcos transform into technology companies, and that the telecommunications sector will have a transformative role within the logistics sector.

“We should no longer think of telecommunication companies, mobile network operators, purely as serving data to customers.

“The future will see telcos transform into techcos, technology companies,” Fahmi said.

He said this at the press conference following the launch of CelcomDigi's intelligent warehouse, claimed to be the country's first industrial B2B live use case powered by 5G Standalone (5G-SA), here today.

According to the telco, the warehouse is also reportedly able to optimise space utilisation, boost operational efficiency and achieve inventory accuracy through the integration of the company’s 5G-SA network, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems.

Fahmi further said "it is not improbable that in a not-so-distant future scenario, a lot of mobile network operators will be offering not just basic data services" but also applications solutions, and that these applications would very likely be built and tested in-house.

“Going forward, there’s a lot of opportunity, and I think this application stack, this application layer will be a very exciting field indeed,” he noted.

During the press conference, Fahmi also shared his hopes for more usage of 5G technology and the data highway routes that have been built within the logistics industry.

“I hope we use this opportunity to discuss with MCMC and with the Ministry of Communications, perhaps from the SME side adoption of 5G, and whether we should propose some things for better and wider adoption,” he shared.
