BERLIN: WhatsApp is preparing to introduce usernames in 2026, with a reservation feature currently being tested in a beta version of the app, according to tech industry media reports.

The benefit is that once you are contacted by your username, you don't need to share your phone number, which reduces the risk of it ending up with scam callers.

Users may want to start thinking about a preferred handle, along with backups in case their first choice is taken when reservations open in the near future.

Two years after Meta's plans to introduce usernames first surfaced, WhatsApp began emailing businesses in November to let them know that one of the "most requested features" was in the works, Android Police reported.

According to tech news websites, the following conventions will apply to usernames:

  • Only lowercase letters, numbers, dots and underscores are permitted.
  • Usernames must include at least one lowercase letter.
  • Names beginning with "www." or ending in a domain name are not permitted.

Usernames, which are reportedly set to be optional, would be a boost to the messenger app's security and privacy. Contacting someone would no longer be as simple as knowing a phone number, and other users would not be able to pass on your mobile number so easily.

The WhatsApp message to businesses says: "We have heard that people feel more confident engaging with businesses when their personal information stays private."

According to tech website WABetaInfo.com, WhatsApp is also planning to add an extra layer of security to prevent unwanted chat requests from anyone who knows your username. First-time chat contacts would then first need to enter a username key.

Rival messenger Signal introduced usernames as an alternative, secure way to connect in early 2024. There, a name can be changed at will or deleted entirely. – dpa
