WASHINGTON: Elon Musk said on Saturday he rejected an invitation from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to visit his private island, after newly released documents listed the tech billionaire's name in Epstein's calendar.
"Epstein tried to get me to go to his island and I REFUSED," he wrote on X.
US Democrats on Friday released additional documents from Epstein's estate. Among them was an entry dated December 6, 2014, reading: "Reminder: Elon Musk to island Dec 6 (is this still happening?)." The calendar does not show whether the visit took place.
Epstein, who for years abused minors, owned a private Caribbean island named Little St James, which was alleged to have been a crime scene. He died in 2019 at age 66 in a New York jail cell in what authorities ruled a suicide, sparking conspiracy theories due to his extensive connections to politicians, celebrities and billionaires.
The documents mark the latest release in a politically sensitive case. Democrats said they had obtained the files from Epstein's estate, adding to earlier tranches published in recent weeks.
The controversy has also resurfaced for US President Donald Trump, who was seen in past party videos with Epstein and has faced scrutiny for not fully releasing case files despite earlier promises to do so. Musk had previously added to the debate by suggesting, without providing evidence, that Trump's name appeared in sealed documents. – dpa
