It's a new milestone. While TikTok's future in the United States remains somewhat shaky, the Chinese platform is now the favorite social network among teenagers there. According to Piper Sandler's latest "Taking Stock with Teens” report published in spring 2025, 47% of teenagers surveyed named TikTok as their favorite app, equaling Snapchat's record set in 2017.

The Chinese app is crushing the competition: nearly half of US teenagers cite TikTok as their favorite social media platform, up from 39% previously, according to the latest biannual "Taking Stock with Teens” survey conducted by Piper Sandler among 6,455 young people with an average age of 16.2. Not only does this put TikTok in first place, but it also gives it a clear lead over all its competitors.

While Snapchat attracted 47% of teenagers in 2017, it now accounts for only 14% of them, down from 18% last fall.

With 28% of the vote, Instagram remains in the top three favorite social networks among American teens. But the platform, once the undisputed leader, now seems to be struggling to compete with the creative, viral force that is TikTok. Since the last report, the Meta-owned social network has lost four percentage points.

And the most used?

Despite TikTok's growing dominance, Instagram remains the most used social network each month by American teenagers, with 87% of them active on the platform, far ahead of TikTok at 79%. Snapchat, meanwhile, maintains a solid position with 72% of monthly users, even recording a slight bump, according to the agency Marketing Charts.

Meanwhile, young Americans also seem to enjoy spending time on Netflix, with 31% saying they spend more time there every day, surpassing YouTube, which attracts only 26% of their daily attention. This trend contrasts with that observed in South Korea, where YouTube remains dominant. – AFP Relaxnews
