TikTok's success is well established. With 159 million monthly active users in Europe, the Chinese giant confirms its position among the leaders. And it's in France that these users are most numerous, with over 25 million of them.
To meet European requirements, TikTok has once again been working on transparency. In "TikTok's DSA Transparency Report,” the platform reviewed its results from July to December 2024. It shows that the social network has 159 million monthly active users – a leap of almost nine million new accounts compared to the 150 million users announced in October 2024.
France leads the European Union with the most monthly active users at 25.1 million, followed by Germany (24.2 million) and Italy (22.8 million).
In addition to the number of active users, the platform also reveals the number of items removed for moderation. Almost 21.2 million items of content were removed from the platform for violation of community rules, and over 1.5 million for non-compliance with the platform's advertising policy. Over 4.7 million accounts were banned from the platform.
The Chinese giant says it takes "under seven hours” to react to reports of illegal content. Out of 231,711 reports involving 122,913 different items of content, TikTok took action against 19,888 items on the grounds that they "violated local laws" and 14,744 items on the grounds that they violated the platform's policies.
The Chinese social network now has 5,807 moderators dedicated to moderating content in the European Union, compared to the reported 6,354 in October last year.
Users are not the only ones who can report content. Governments can also ask TikTok directly to moderate content. During the period under review, 701 content removal orders and 9,039 requests for user information were issued by European authorities. Requests can take from less than six hours for content, and from 7 to 28 days for user information.
According to the report, France requested the removal of 197 items of terrorist content, the highest number in Europe. French authorities also requested information on 77 pieces of content reported for harassment or bullying and up to 2,798 for "National Security Terrorism,” again the highest number among EU countries.
Despite this, the platform said it had reinstated almost 1.5 million items of content after the user contested the infringement. According to the report, TikTok makes this decision in less than two hours. – AFP Relaxnews
