E-bike sales may be booming, but their owners aren't always aware of how to get the best out of their new bike's battery life. Here are a few tips on how to take good care of your battery and get the most out of your electric bike over time.
Manage tire pressure
Simply overinflating your tires very slightly can save some battery life, as the surface area in contact with the road is reduced. This is especially true when riding on flat and smooth terrain, on a well-maintained asphalt road, for example. That's one reason why it's always important to carry a bicycle pump (in your backpack), taking care, of course, not to exceed the authorized pressure limit, which is usually indicated on the tire.
Check the transmission
A clean and properly greased transmission is essential to avoid losing efficiency and thus affecting the overall battery life of your bike. Indeed, if the transmission is stiff, the motor has to work harder. That's why it's advisable to regularly check the condition of the various parts that make up the transmission and to remember to grease them if necessary.
Switch to "Eco" mode
When available, the "Eco" mode should be preferred in order to reduce battery consumption, especially when the terrain is flat and the electric assistance is not getting that much use. It's also better to avoid using the electric motor during acceleration phases, or even downhill, where it's advisable to cut off all electric assistance.
Sit properly
Even if the gain in range may seem insignificant, sitting correctly to your electric bike can also save a little battery power. It's therefore advisable to lean forward slightly, without spreading your arms too much, for a better air penetration. It is also important to avoid overloading the bike, either by carrying a passenger or by pulling a trailer, for example.
Avoid overheating
Finally, you should avoid damaging your battery by overheating it. It's better to let it rest and cool down for a few minutes after recharging it, for example. Similarly, it the battery has just been in use, it's strongly advised to wait a little before recharging it when you get home. – AFP Relaxnews
