The ‘face with tears of joy’ emoji has been ranked as the top emoji for both male and female users across the globe, according to a new report.

The Future of Creativity: 2022 Global Emoji Trend Report by Adobe also revealed that the thumbs up, rolling on the floor laughing face, heart and face blowing a kiss are the top most used emojis.

The report claimed that over half of global users have actively increased their emoji use over the past 12 months, with nearly 75% of users sending up to 50 emojis in online messages per day. It added that 91% of global users will rely on emoji to lighten the mood or express support for others, while 67% say they will use emojis when they have difficulties expressing their emotions in words.

Overall, the report said that female users are more likely to express specific emotions with emoji.

In terms of romantic expression, 71% of global users feel using an emoji is a must when talking to someone that they are interested in. The emoji that makes users more likeable while flirting or dating online is the smiling face with hearts.

On the other hand, using an eggplant emoji will make a user appear less likeable when flirting or dating online. The emoji has been associated with sexual expression. In 2015, the Guardian reported that Instagram blocked search results for the eggplant emoji as it has violated their community guidelines.

Additionally, it pays to know your emojis before sending them. The report stated that 78% of users feel confident that they are aware of the meaning behind the latest emojis and use them correctly, with 80% saying users should only use emoji when they fully understand them.

The Global Emoji Trend Report is based on an analysis conducted in March to April this year involving 10,000 frequent emoji users across seven markets namely the US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia and South Korea.
