PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has instructed a courier company, which it did not name, to provide an explanation after a viral video depicted its staff members mishandling packages.

MCMC said it views the incident seriously and has issued a warning to the company to take measures to improve its package handling procedures.

“Courier companies licensed under Post Services Act 2012 are reminded to comply with conditions and rules set with emphasis on protecting consumers rights," MCMC said in a statement.

Failure to comply with any subsidiary legislation under the Postal Services Act 2012 will result in a fine of no more than RM300,000 or prison term of not exceeding three years, or both.

The regulatory body also urged consumers to understand and be aware of their rights before engaging a courier company.

"Consumers have to contact the service provider for any complaints or claims if the delivery process resulted in damages or missing items," it said.

Consumers can also file a complaint via the MCMC portal with details of the incident for further action.

On Feb 7, J&T Express issued an apology after a video surfaced on social media showing staff members at the company's sorting centre in Perak tossing packages meant for delivery to consumers.

Users claimed on social media that their packages from online purchases being handled by the company have been delayed due to the incident.

The company issued a statement saying that some employees were unclear about a bonus payment scheme which led to the incident at the sorting centre in Perak.

It added that the matter with its employees has been sorted out.
