Nintendo’s Mario turns 35, gets new games and toys

Nintendo is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its favourite plumber Mario with the release of several new games and toys for the franchise.

Its Switch console system gets a blast from the past with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars game, which bundles three games: Super Mario 64 (1996), Super Mario Sunshine (2002) and Super Mario Galaxy (2007).

According to the Nintendo site, these older games received a refresh with higher resolution graphics, updated controls to work on the Switch and the option to play music from all three games.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is available from Sept 18 until March 2021 for both its physical and digital edition, though the digital edition can be redownloaded if purchased on a Nintendo Account.

The game maker would also be releasing other Mario games and products like Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, a real-life Kart toy controlled using the Switch, which launches on Oct 16 for US$99 (RM410).

Nintendo will also be releasing an updated Game & Watch retro gaming system, first launched in 1980, which comes loaded with the original Super Mario Bros and some additional games.

In keeping to the 35th anniversary theme, it has 35 hidden Easter eggs. The device launches on Nov 13 at US$49.99 (RM207).

Nintendo also partnered with other brands to launch Super Mario-themed products like basketball shoes by Puma, Monopoly and Jenga board games from Hasbro, as well as Super Mario sets for the Lego Nintendo Entertainment System.
