IT security company Trend Micro and software developer Luxoft are teaming up, with the goal of protecting cars from cyberattacks.

With Trend Micro's expertise in cybersecurity and Luxoft's knowledge of the car sector, both companies want to develop systems to protect vehicles from hackers, they say at the Hannover Messe trade fair.

The solution will use machine learning to detect anomalies in the vehicle's communications and behaviour, and automatically initiate the necessary protection measures. In addition, by analysing the data, global security threats should be able to be detected earlier.

"The automobile industry is experiencing massive technological changes towards more connectivity and networked mobility," says Luxoft manager Alwin Bakkenes. The risk of a cyberattack on a vehicle is growing as more cars connect to the cloud or another platform.

Networked vehicles present big challenges, says Eva Chen, head of Trend Micro. Nearly 100% of all vehicles in Europe's leading countries are expected to be networked by the year 2020. – dpa
