KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry expects an announcement about operators involved in developing the second 5G network to be made in a few weeks.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the development plan of the second 5G network is now in the final weeks before the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) finalises the tender process which started on Aug 1.

"We expect that within a few weeks, an announcement can be made on who will be involved in developing the second 5G network," he said at a press conference after witnessing the launch of CIMB Bank Bhd's ‘Kita Bagi Jadi’ campaign here today (Sept 4).

Fahmi said several principles had been highlighted by him and agreed upon by all telecommunication companies before they had a shareholding in Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), among which is that DNB needs to be sustainable.

He said that the services provided by the second network should not be more expensive than that provided by DNB. "In addition, the quality of service must also be as good as that provided by DNB, if not better,” he added.

On Aug 15, Fahmi said four mobile network operators (MNOs) had submitted their respective bids to MCMC to participate in the second 5G network, namely CelcomDigi Bhd, Maxis Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd dan U Mobile Sdn Bhd. – Bernama
