From skills to sustainable impact

Simple initiatives, such as its nationwide Used Cooking Oil collection drives, have also raised public awareness of responsible resource management.

WHEN dots are connected, opportunities are created, potential is expanded and lives are enriched.

Across communities nationwide, promising talents are pursuing their dreams of knowledge, disparities are being narrowed through inclusive access to entrepreneurship and technical training and the environments where we live continue to improve through sustainable initiatives undertaken together.

The impact is greatest when it results from joint efforts. Progress is most meaningful when it is shared and sustained over the long term.

This is the belief of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS), which has the well-being of its stakeholders and future sustainability entrenched in its purpose.

The energy company strives to continue building a legacy with those it crosses paths with, powering ecosystems where everyone can thrive — for Malaysia and beyond.

Education for all

PETRONAS is committed to advancing knowledge and skills among students and educators, enabling them to thrive and positively impact a rapidly evolving world.

Through its PETRONAS Powering Knowledge initiatives, the company ensures access to quality education, capacity building and practical training that prepares Malaysia’s future workforce.

In 2025 alone, PETRONAS supported 1,100 students across all 14 states through the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) and Yayasan Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (YUTP), ensuring that promising talent, regardless of location, has access to the resources and support needed to excel and lead the future of energy and technology.

Since 1975, PETRONAS has invested approximately RM4.2bil in the education sponsorship initiative, benefitting more than 40,000 Malaysian scholars, many of whom have gone on to shape the nation’s professional and leadership landscape.

To meet the demands of the future economy, PETRONAS invests in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The company delivers technical training through platforms such as Vista and the Kimanis Training Centre (KTC), directly aligning local talent with industry standards in the oil and gas sector.

To maximise impact, Program Duta Guru empowers educators to become STEM role models, creating a multiplier effect in learning.

Access to clean water has been extended to 180 Orang Asli families across five villages through the installation of 21 Waterlily systems and 20 sanitation facilities, improving daily living conditions, enhancing hygiene and overall community well-being.

The company also strengthens local capacity through entrepreneurship and upskilling initiatives. Sustaining nature

PETRONAS is driven by a mission to promote biodiversity conservation, environmental education and climate risk management, empowering communities to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable planet.

Through the PETRONAS Planting Tomorrow initiative, the company continues to champion environmental stewardship, reforestation and rehabilitation activities, including mangrove planting and the restoration of marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Aligned with circular economy principles, PETRONAS supports long-term environmental sustainability by upskilling local communities in waste management and entrepreneurship, generating income through corporate and event orders in Bintulu, Kota Kinabalu and Kemaman.

Simple initiatives, such as its nationwide Used Cooking Oil (UCO) collection drives — 12 of which were held across Kuala Lumpur, Sabah, Pulau Pinang and Kuantan — have also raised public awareness of responsible resource management.

PETRONAS’ green collaborations further highlight its commitment to preserving Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. A three-year project with the Mah Meri Cultural Village focuses on restoring coastal ecosystems through mangrove and nipah planting, while empowering 43 indigenous families through economic literacy initiatives and the cultivation of mengkuang pandan for traditional crafts.

Coastal ecosystems also benefit from initiatives such as the Crab Restocking Programme with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), which saw the release of 30,000 crablets to restore ecological balance along the Negri Sembilan coastline, contributing to an estimated 10% increase in biomass yield in targeted zones.

In Terengganu, 40 mini Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) were contributed in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Terengganu, creating sustainable fish-breeding grounds while empowering the Kuala Kemaman fishing community.

Across both short-term and long-term environmental programmes, PETRONAS aims to plant more than 15,000 trees, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and safeguarding natural ecosystems for future generations.

Shared progress

Guided by its Social Impact Management (SIM) strategy, PETRONAS channels its resources and people towards creating meaningful, long-term impact for communities across the nation.
