Titans collide again as VI and SMS Hulu Selangor set up blockbuster SSR final

Victoria Institution (VI) stamped their return to the SSR big stage with a hard-earned semi-final victory over MRSM Balik Pulau at Stadium UiTM, Shah Alam.

SHAH ALAM: The stage is set for the Grand Final of Super Schools Rugby (SSR) 2026 after two powerhouses of school rugby, Victoria Institution (VI) and SMS Hulu Selangor, booked their places in the title decider following convincing semi-final victories at Stadium UiTM, Shah Alam on Saturday (June 27).

The showdown will revive memories of the SSR 2023 final, where VI emerged champions after defeating SMS Hulu Selangor to claim their second title.

Three years on, the two giants meet again at the highest stage, with even greater stakes as both sides now stand one win away from becoming the first team in Super Schools Rugby history to secure a third championship.

The first semi-final delivered a repeat of last season’s Grand Final, as runners-up Victoria Institution (VI) avenged their previous defeat with a thrilling 34-27 victory over defending champions MRSM Balik Pulau.

In a high-intensity encounter from start to finish, both sides traded blows throughout the match before VI’s composure, discipline, and experience proved decisive in the closing stages to end the defending champions’ run.

Milo Pro Player of the Match, Indra Putra Shahrulnizam, played a pivotal role in VI’s triumph, contributing 19 points through a composed display of kicking accuracy and clinical finishing, steering his side back into the Grand Final.

The victory not only avenged their defeat to MRSM in last season’s final, but also marked VI’s fourth appearance in the SSR Grand Final, further strengthening their reputation as one of the most consistent teams in the history of the competition.

In the second semi-final, two-time SSR champions SMS Hulu Selangor lived up to expectations with a commanding 41-15 win over Sekolah Dato’ Abdul Razak.

Despite the school showing strong determination in their maiden semi-final appearance, SMS Hulu Selangor experience and discipline ultimately proved decisive.

Mohd Uwais Irfan was the standout performer, orchestrating play brilliantly and repeatedly creating opportunities for his teammates to score.

The victory sees SMS Hulu Selangor reach the SSR Grand Final for a record fifth time — the most by any team in the history of the competition.

It further underlines their consistency as one of the dominant forces in Malaysian school rugby since the tournament’s inception in 2013.
