PETALING JAYA: Mohd Khairin Hakimi Kamarul Azmi could not have asked for a better end to his Malaysia Games (Sukma) journey after winning gold with his younger brother Mohd Darwisyh Imran Kamarul Azmi.
The siblings caught the eye in the men's artistic silat doubles final at Seri Sarjana Hall, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), scoring 9.910 points with an energetic routine.
Khairin and his younger brother Darwisyh, 17, edged Selangor's Ahmad Baihaqi Shahrul Nizam-Mohd Harith Ikram Sazulie, who had to settle for silver with 9.890 points.
Federal Territories pair Mohd Zaheen Hazwan-Mohd Loqman Hakim and Sarawak's Mohd Syafiq Abdullah-Sofyan Shah shared the bronze.
For Khairin, the gold was a fitting reward for two years of hard work and a memorable farewell before he leaves for Egypt to further his studies at Al-Azhar University.
"This is my first Sukma and also my last because I will be going to Egypt after this, so I really wanted to give my best.
"We were confident in the work we had put in, but we never underestimated the other competitors. We knew everyone wanted to win, so we just focused on giving our best and thankfully we managed to win the gold," said Khairin.
Darwisyh, meanwhile, is likely to switch to another category in future as his elder brother and doubles partner will be away in Egypt for the next few years.
"I will probably compete in another category after this, but I'm happy that I managed to win the gold with my brother," added Darwisyh.
