SHAH ALAM: What began as a dream to travel the world through judo came full circle for Johor's Mohd Nur Amin Mohd Faizal when he clinched the boys’ Under-55kg gold at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) at the IDCC Convention Centre in Shah Alam on Friday (Aug 14).

Nur Amin secured an ippon against Terengganu’s Ammar Rafiki Mohd Ridzuwan with 1:51s remaining on the clock to claim the title – and make the moment even more special with his biggest inspiration watching from the sidelines.

The 20-year-old’s brother, Mohd Nur Iman Mohd Faizal, won the same category at the 2024 Games in Kuching and was there to see him follow in his footsteps.

“My brother is my biggest inspiration. I only followed him to training after seeing him travelling all over the world for the sport,” said Nur Amin after the fight.

Despite his brother’s hiatus from the sport since 2022 due to work commitments and injuries, Nur Amin has quietly assumed his brother’s mantle.

His most significant achievement since joining in 2019 came in his bronze match defeat against the Philippines at the 2025 SEA Games.

However, he admits the constant wear on his body is already starting to show.

“I have experienced the same back pain (as my brother) even today.”

“But I waited so long for this moment so I pushed through.”

“I will continue for as long as I can.”

Meanwhile, it was double delight for Johor as Putera Mohd Qaid Muaz Mohd Zallei secured the gold for the boys’ Under-60kg category as well.

In the girls’ events, Selangor’s Nur Sufia Arisha Mohd Rasidi claimed the Under-44kg event while M. Dewi won the Under-48kg.
