PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian lawn bowling team have collected their third medal in the Commonwealth Games after the men’s pairs clinched the bronze medal.
In the bronze-medal playoff, Mohd Soufi Rusli and Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim took the lead by winning the first set 5-4 on Sunday (Aug 2).
The second set was also closely contested with Canadians Ryan Bester-Joe Bezear taking a 2-0 lead but the Malaysians managed to make it 2-3 by the third end.
When it came to the final end, both sides were tied 3-3, but the Malaysians clinched it winning 1.5-0.5.
In the men’s pairs semi-finals, Soufi and Amirul were beaten by Northern Ireland’s Gary Kelly and Adam McKeown.
The Malaysian duo were outclassed in the first set, going down 1-9, before rallying strongly to take the second set 8-2.
However, Kelly and McKeown held their nerve in the tie-break, edging through 1-0 to seal the match.
Earlier, Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple won the men’s singles silver, while Aleena Ahmad Nawawi-Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman won the women’s pairs silver.
