PETALING JAYA: Malaysia added another gold medal to their tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after weightlifter Syahmi Nor Ghazali delivered the nation's sixth gold in the men's 94kg event on Wednesday (July 29).
Competing in the final at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo, Syahmi was pushed all the way by Canada's Alex Bellemarre in a closely fought contest.
Syahmi eventually edged Bellemarre by just 1kg with a total lift of 347kg, made up of 150kg in the snatch and a Games record of 197kg in the clean and jerk.
Bellemarre settled for silver with a total of 346kg after lifting 159kg in the snatch and 187kg in the clean and jerk.
Australia's Oliver Saxton claimed bronze with a total of 336kg, comprising 156kg in the snatch and 180kg in the clean and jerk.
It was the weightlifting team's fifth gold medal in Glasgow following the triumphs of Mohd Aniq Kasdan (60kg), Mohd Aznil Bidin (65kg), Erry Hidayat (79kg) and Hafizuddin Roslin (88kg).
Malaysia's other gold medal was delivered by Datuk Abdul Latif Romly in the men's T20 long jump.
Malaysia are now sixth in the overall medal standings, tied with Nigeria on six gold medals.
