PETALING JAYA: One race win, three podium finishes in four races and several misfortunes capped off an incredible yet challenging weekend of racing for Malaysia’s Wing Hin Motorsports at the Bangsaen Grand Prix, which was also Round 2 of the Thailand Super Series.
Taking to the grid as defending champion in the GT4 class, and with four entries in the Super Touring Class, Wing Hin Motorsports continued to prove themselves as a dominant force on the challenging 3.74km Bangsaen street circuit.
In Race 1 of the GTS Class, the #39 Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 piloted by Hong Kong driver Ryan Wong and Malaysian touring car specialist Mitchell Cheah claimed second on the podium after a strategic and text book one-hour race.
Mitchell was actually first across the finish line but was later served a 15-second time penalty, which dropped him to second.
“Overall, it was a good race. We crossed the finish line in first place but due to the penalty we just missed out. Coming to a very challenging track like Bangsaen, the strategy was always about collecting as many points as we can moving ahead and I’m glad we managed to do just that,” said Mitchell.
In Race 1 of the Super Touring Class, Nabil Azlan who started from second on the grid also crossed the chequered flag in second spot.
Nabil, however, was subsequently promoted to race winner after the winning #55 car of N. Chanoknun and N. Phiranat was dealt a 10-second penalty for a pitlane speed infringement.
The Thailand Super Series will next visit the Petronas Sepang International Circuit from Aug 21-23.
