Fencers eye gold at home SEA Games in 2027

PETALING JAYA: The national fencing camp are determined to turn silver into gold when Malaysia host the SEA Games in 2027.

Malaysian Fencing Federation (MFF) president Rusni Abu Hassan said the governing body were encouraged by the two silver medals won in the men’s foil and sabre team events at last month’s Thailand SEA Games.

Rusni said the federation would focus not just on sharpening senior athletes, but ensuring the next wave of athletes would be given the best preparations.

“As hosts, we are determined to turn silver into gold and further elevate our standings in the regional fencing landscape,” said Rusni in a press statement.

“MFF remain committed to nurturing both established athletes and rising stars by building a sustainable foundation for future success on the international stage.

“This positive result will no doubt draw greater attention to the sport of fencing and inspire many young Malaysians to take up the sport.”

In Bangkok, the sabre team - Wong Tzer Chyuan, Syed Adam Emir Syed Aidi Putra, Terry Dong, and Sebastian Sheng, ended Malaysia’s wait for a medal in the event since they last won a bronze at the 2015 edition in Singapore.

Meanwhile, the foil team had Tristan Cheng, Kaerlan Vinod Kamalanathan, Heng Yu Shen and Saif Nordin to thank for the silver medal in Bangkok.

“After an 11-year wait, Malaysia’s sabre fencers finally reclaimed SEA Games glory with a medal-winning performance in Thailand,” said Rusni.

“The target was to secure two bronze medals, but the men’s foil and sabre teams both rose to the challenge and exceeded the target with silvers.

“These results are a testament to the dedication, depth and resilience of our fencers.”
