Cambodia pulls out of SEA Games

BANGKOK: Cambodia has pulled out from the SEA Games.

It came as a surprise as they are pulling out a day after taking part in the opening ceremony at the Rajamangala Stadium on Tuesday (Dec 9).

Cambodia Olympic Committee secretary-general Vath Chamroeun said the decision was made due to serious concerns and requests from the families of their athletes to have their relatives return home immediately.

"We must withdraw all of our delegation and arrange for their prompt return to Cambodia for safety reasons," he said in a statement.

"This decision was not made lightly. We greatly appreciate the hospitality, warmth, and spirit of sportsmanship extended to our athletes by Thailand and the Thailand Olympic Committee throughout their stay.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this early departure may cause and remain grateful for your understanding and support."

Vath said his committee will coordinate with the Thai office regarding departure arrangements and any required formalities.

Two days ago, Thailand launched air strikes along its disputed border with Cambodia and tensions continue to rise as both sides have not called a truce on the ongoing issue.
