PETALING JAYA: National dancers Ooi Ken Vin and Zoe Tan made the country proud when they won the World Dancesport Federation (WDSF) Asian Championship Under-21 ten dance at the Malaysian Open.

The 19-year-old pair captivated judges and audiences with their performance to clinch first place ahead of Uzbekistan’s Savva Venidiktov-Darya Panova in second, while Hong Kong’s Marcus Hui-Ng Shuk Yee took bronze at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Shah Alam on Saturday.

The Malaysian pair had recently won silver at the Vietnam Dancesport Festival earlier this month, and were thrilled to win the Asian Championships ten dance for the first time.

“We are happy with this result and satisfied with our performance. There is always room for improvement but we made sure to fix our mistakes from the semi-finals and not repeat them,” said Ken Vin.

Meanwhile in the WDSF World Ranking events, Cherry Yeo took gold in the solo latin female category, with compatriot Bernice Lu taking bronze as Hong Kong’s Abby Lo clinched silver.

In the youth solo latin male event, it was a sweep for Malaysia on the podium as Pua Jun Yu won gold, with Xiao Jua Yue in second and Yap Chin Qian third.

The young duo of Lee Chen Sheng-Hazel Tan added another gold medal for Malaysia by winning the youth latin category.

The pair scored 315 points, a sizeable margin ahead of silver medallists Lee Ka Kok-Tsang Tsz Ki (284), and Kazakhstan’s Chingiz Agibayev-Adeliya Karkenova in third (252).

Junior dancers Yap Chin Qian and Angel Chin made it six gold medals for Malaysia from the second day of the competition, winning the junior II solo latin male and juvenile II solo latin female categories, respectively.
