Sharmendran leaves coaching fate in karate body’s hands

PETALING JAYA: National karate head coach R. Sharmendran is leaving his future in the hands of the Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf).

“Whether I stay or not, the national karate squad will remain strong and that’s how it should be,” said Sharmendran.

The interim coach was responding about whether he would continue leading the national team until the SEA Games in Thailand or return to his original role with the back-up squad.

The four-time SEA Games gold medallist believed that regardless of who was in charge, the team’s preparations for the regional meet at the end of the year would not be affected.

The national karate squad have long held a strong reputation as one of Malaysia’s top gold medal contributors at multi-sport events like the SEA Games.

“My contract runs until the end of the year, and from what I understand, I’m still part of the national programme. But for any further details, it’s best to refer to Makaf,” said Sharmendran.

“The athletes are consistent, and I’m very pleased with that and this is the kind of system we should be working towards.

“Coaches may change, but what matters most is that the athletes stay consistent. From what I see, the exponents are working extremely hard and have made a lot of sacrifices.”

Sharmendran was appointed interim head coach last December after Egyptian coach Tamer Abdelraouf Mourssy’s contract was not renewed.

He also recently guided the national team to an impressive haul of six golds, five silvers and 15 bronzes at the South-East Asian Karate Federation (SEAKF) Championships in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, two weeks ago.

Makaf president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad previously said he is personally satisfied with Sharmendran’s work, but any decision on a permanent appointment must be discussed with other council members at the next executive committee meeting.
