Coaches get credit for dancesport team’s success in Germany

The Malaysia Dancesport Federation hailed the role played by their coaches Chua Zjen Fong and Evon Chong after their athletes danced their way to two golds and one bronze medal at the Dancesport Festival in Bremen, Germany on Sunday.

Cherry Yeo claimed the adult female solo latin event win while 17-year-old Yap Wan Xin won gold in the youth female solo latin category in the event, sanctioned by World Dancesport Federation (WDSF).

Wan Xin’s solo performance showcased her exceptional talent and dedication, earning her the top spot in a highly competitive category and highlighting her as one of the standout performers of the event.

The 17-year-old from Pahang’s win also moved her up by five spots in the youth world rankings from eighth to world No. 3.

Cherry, who achieved an outstanding victory last November by winning three gold medals at the Mallorca Dance Festival in Spain, displayed her exceptional talent and artistry in dance, and as a result saw her ranking rise from world No. 9 to sixth in the adult category.

Meanwhile, Kimberly Chew, who, at just 14, delivered a stunning performance to secure the bronze medal in the junior II open latin event.

Kimberly’s achievement goes to show the promising future of the sport in the country and the young athlete’s potential as her world ranking also rose from 189th to 43rd.

Malaysia had sent a team of nine dancers from the Kuala Lumpur Dancesport Association (KLDSA), who have been trained by coaches from the MY Dancesport Academy to compete in Germany among 2500 athletes from 46 countries.

The MDF in a statement said, “The success of the Malaysian Dancesport team would not have been possible without the support and guidance of coaches Chua Zjen Fong and Evon Chong.

“Their commitment to nurturing these athletes’ talents have been instrumental in achieving these remarkable results.

“Additionally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for the ministry’s generous funding and unwavering support, which has played a crucial role in enabling the team to compete on the world stage and bring pride to our nation.”
