PETALING JAYA: Newly crowned changquan world champion Wong Weng Son continues to fly high in Fort Worth, Texas, achieving a historic feat for the Malaysian wushu team with his second medal in as many days at the World Championships.
The 31-year-old bagged silver in the men’s qiangshu (spear) event with a power-packed performance, scoring 9.800 points.
China’s Zhang Qingchun secured the gold with 9.833 points while Indonesia’s Mohd Daffa Golden Boy took bronze with 9.760.
With the silver-effort, Weng Son has achieved the feat of becoming the first Malaysian exponent to finish on the podium in men’s qiangshu in four consecutive world championships.
Weng Son made his world meet debut in Jakarta in 2015 with silver in the event. He went on to repeat the feat in 2017 in Kazan, Russia, and also at the last world meet in Shanghai in 2019.
On Saturday, Weng Son made amends for his Hangzhou Asian Games disappointment in missing out on a medal by winning the changuan gold at the world meet.
“Qiangshu is one of my favourites event but it’s always left out from the Asian Games programme. I guess the pressure was also less as I had contributed gold earlier. I just performed,” said Weng Son.
“I didn’t put a lot of expectations as China have always participated in this event. I just wanted to finish the routine without any mistakes.
“Big thanks to my president (Datuk Chong Kim Fatt) and the coaches who always supported me from the day I started till now,” said the exponent who hails from Seremban.
Weng Son can bow out from Fort Worth as the most successful Malaysian when he competes in men’s jianshu today.
It is also an event where he has always finished in top three. He came in third in his debut in Jakarta, won gold in Kazan and settled for silver in Shanghai.
Malaysia are currently placed fifth in the overall medal haul of 1-5-4.
