Zamziezah bounces back from lowest ebb to clinch crown

TWO years ago, lawn bowler Nor Zamziezah Ahmad went through the lowest point in her life when she tragically lost her mother.

The Terengganu lass felt lost, alone and helpless that she barely trained for a year.

However, with the support and encouragement from coach Zulkepli Wahab and teammates, Zamziezah slowly got back to her feet and yesterday, she rolled down a gold medal in the women’s singles at the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Zamziezah, 22, was a picture of composure as she defeated Kedah’s Nurul Alia Fitrah Mohd Ali 20-13 in 19 ends in the final at the Bukit Kiara Sports Complex. The bronze went to Pahang’s Nik Asma Ifatul.

The victory was made sweeter as it was her third and last Sukma and she won it in her favourite event.

“I’m so proud to contribute the first lawn bowls gold for Terengganu. Two years ago, I didn’t want to bowl at all after losing my mother, Roshani Karim, who had a brain infection,” said Zamziezah.

“I couldn’t train much as I was feeling very down. It was really a low point in my life.

“Then, thanks to the support from my four siblings, coach and teammates, I got back to training ... and I trained hard.

“I kept motivating myself and I’m glad that all of it paid off with this gold, which I dedicate to my mum,” added an emotional Zamziezah.

The youngster can be proud of her achievement as this was the first time she was taking part in the singles.

In the last edition in Perak 2018, Zamziezah won gold in the triples.

She made her maiden Sukma appearance at the age of 16 in Sarawak six years ago. She competed in the triples and fours but did not win any medals.
