Zii Jia to replace Khairul Anuar as male flagbearer from Malaysia in Tokyo Olympics

PETALING JAYA: National shuttler Lee Zii Jia (pic) will replace archer Khairul Anuar Mohamad as the national contingent's male flagbearer for the Tokyo Olympics later this month.

The 23-year-old will join mixed doubles teammate Goh Liu Ying in carrying the Jalur Gemilang during the opening ceremony on July 23.

OCM in a statement said the change was made after Khairul requested to be excused from the duty as it clashes with the archery competition date.

Khairul is due to take part in the qualifying round on July 23.

"Following the request by Khairul Anuar bin Mohamad to be recused as the flag bearer for the Malaysian contingent at the Olympic Games 2020, the OCM Executive Board has agreed to nominate Lee Zii Jia as the male flag bearer for the upcoming Games in Tokyo, " said OCM in a statement.

"Zii Jia was chosen among the male athletes who will be in Tokyo during the time of the opening ceremony. He represents the future generation of Olympic athletes and is also a medal hopeful."
