PETALING JAYA: StarSport reporter T. Avineshwaran has received recognition from the prestigious International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in the best column category.
Avineshwaran’s commentary “Kick out the racists in football”, which was published on March 10,2020, was adjudged joint fifth during a virtual award ceremony on Monday.
His article was one of 310 entries from media agencies worldwide and was shortlisted as one of the top 10 best columns two weeks ago.
The top prize went to Dina Asher-Smith of The Telegraph (Think racism hasn’t affected me? It’s there almost every day); followed by Andreea Giuclea of Lead.ro (How do we reconcile the legend Kobe Bryant with sexual abuse allegations); and Sports.ru’s Alexey Avdokhin’s (Now the world is sure that Russian sport is a complete fraud. And this is true).
Meanwhile, two Astro Arena reporters – Wan Abdul Muiz Wan Abdul Aziz’s “10 centimetre” finished second in the young reporters Under-30 category.
Compatriot Norbazly Wan Azmi’s feature “The Stranded Champion” was chosen as the top four under the Covid-19 video short feature category.
It is the first time that Malaysian media have made it to the top 10 in the AIPS award since it was first introduced in 2018.
