‘StarSport’ writer on AIPS shortlist for best column award

PETALING JAYA: StarSport’s reporter T. Avineshwaran has gained international recognition as one of his articles has been shortlisted for the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) best column award.

Avineshwaran’s commentary on “Kick out the racists in football”, which appeared on March 10,2020, in StarSport, has been shortlisted as one of the top 10 best columns.

He went through a stringent selection process as there were 310 entries from different media agencies throughout the world for the best column category. He is the only one from the Malaysian media who made it to the top 10 list in his category.

The top three winners will be announced on March 22.

Avineshwaran has been with The Star for more than eight years. He started as a digital news gatherer for the Star’s Editor’s Choice in 2012 before joining the online team from 2013-2016. He later joined the Ipoh bureau from 2016-2018 before starting his career with the sports desk in 2019.

Another Malaysian reporter Wan Abdul Muiz Wan Abdul Aziz from Astro Arena has been shortlisted in two categories – the best video short feature and young reporter under 30 years old.

It’s the first time that Malaysian media have made it to the top 10 in AIPS award.
