Malaysia clinches first chess gold in SEA Games

MANILA: Yeoh Li Tian bagged a surprise gold medal for Malaysia in the men's rapid chess competition in Subic.

The 20-year-old international master came out tops ahead of Vietnam's Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Anh Khoi, who got the silver and bronze medals respectively.

It is the first gold medal for Malaysia in chess. Malaysia had won a bronze medal in the sport in the 2011 (Indonesia) and 2013 (Myanmar) editions of the Games, while it was not contested in 2015 (Singapore) and 2017 (Kuala Lumpur) editions.
