Azroy lifts Malaysia's first gold at C'wealth Games


GOLD COAST: Weightlifter Mohd Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad has lifted Malaysia's first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The 24-year-old lived to expectations in the men's below 56kg category by powering to the gold at the Carrara Indoor Stadium on Thursday.

It was a double joy for the Rompin-born athlete as he also broke the Games record in snatch with 117kg before finishing with a total of 261kg.

The previous snatch record of 116kg set by Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim in New Delhi in 2010.

Azroy also better Amirul's total of 260kg in Machester Games in 2002.

His total lift was 261kg was also personal best, bettering the 256kg he did at the Commonwealth Championships in Gold Coast last September to win gold.
