Joanne hooks up with badminton again in London

FORMER international Joanne Quay is in Wembley – but as the liaison officer for Malaysia at the World Championships.

Joanne, who last donned national colours at the 2006 Asian Games with Lim Pek Siah, said she was looking forward to getting the feel of badminton again.

“I have been studying sports business management at the Leeds Metropolitan University here for the last three years. I heard about the worlds and immediately volunteered for the liaison officer job,” she said.

Joanne, who is sponsored by the university to pursue her studies, dropped by to meet up with her friends in the Malaysian team during training yesterday.

“Besides my studies, I also conduct coaching on a part-time basis and I still take part in competitions here. It keeps me happy to still be associated with the sport. I miss playing competitively with the Malaysian team,” said Joanne.

The 31-year-old Joanne did the country proud at the 1998 World Junior Championships when she bagged the mixed doubles gold with Chan Chong Ming. She is also a member of the silver medal-winning team of the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
