SEREMBAN: Selangor’s Foo Jian Beng made the biggest splash on the first day of the national junior age-group swimming championships at the Paroi Aquatics Complex here yesterday.

The 18-year-old warmed up in style for the Malaysia Games (Sukma), to be held in Terengganu in two months’ time, by smashing Daniel Bego’s old marks in Group 1 (15-17) 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Jian Beng had clocked a personal best of 51.89 to win the 100m freestyle in the morning to dip under Daniel’s previous best of 52.61 set last year.

Jian Beng returned to the pool later to register a winning time of 2:12.17 in the 200m individual medley, bettering Daniel’s mark of 2:13.90 set in 2006.

He just missed out on a third meet record when he won the 100m butterfly in 56.81, which was just 0.34secs off Daniel’s time of 56.47 set last year.

Smashing: Selangor’s Foo Jian Beng broke the 100m freestyle and 200m individualmedley national junior records at the national age-group meet in Paroi yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur’s Kevin Lim proved he is the top long distance swimmer in the country by smashing former SEA Games double gold medallists Die Ung Manggang’s old mark en route to winning the 1,500m Open final yesterday.

The 16-year-old swimmer, who is under the full-time training programme based at Bukit Jalil, clocked 16:23.03 to erase Die Ung’s mark of 16:39.92 set way back in 1996.

National coach Paul Birmingham was happy with the time clocked by his young charge.

“Jian Beng could have dipped under 16:20 but he stopped at the 1,400m mark. He thought it was the end of the race and his miscalculation cost him a few seconds,” said the Australian. “I’m happy for him because he has cut some 20 seconds off his personal best in three months.”

Another promising youngster Hii Siew Siew of Sarawak broke Cindy Ong’s nine-year-old meet record of 1:07.09 en route to winning the 100m butterfly in her age-group in 1:04.28. The 14-year-old Siew Siew was a bronze medallist in the Korat SEA Games.
