PETALING JAYA: Top club side Malacca Telekom have signed up former South Korean Olympic team player Yun Won-chol (pic) to beef up their attack for the Super League which kicks off on Saturday.
Won-chol played for several South Korean clubs which included top club Daejeon HSW. He played 19 matches for them last season and was the third highest goal poacher in the league scoring 13 goals in the 2005/2006 season.
“My main intention now is to help Telekom club win honours this season. I want to help them become champions,” said Won-chol who arrived in Kuala Lumpur last week.
“It’s my first experience playing for a foreign club. The biggest challenge for me at the moment is getting used to the hot and humid local conditions. I might take a month to acclimatise.
“I have attended a few training sessions with the other players. So far it's been good and I'm just looking forward to the start of the season,” added Won-chol who spoke through an interpreter.
Telekom have also signed Brazilian defender Joao Bandoch, who played for Perlis two seasons ago to strengthen their back-line.
There is still one slot left for Telekom this season as all contracts of Zambian Chaswe Nsofwa, Indonesian Ponaryo Astaman and Cameroonian Francois Mpensa – who played for Telekom last season – were not renewed.
Telekom have also hired former Selangor player Nazzab Hizan to strengthen the midfield.
Meanwhile, TM Group CEO Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar set a target of finishing in the top three in the Super League this season.
“We finished as runners-up and reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup last season. We believe those were good achievements. This season we are hoping for a top three finish,” said Abdul Wahid during the press conference for the team announcement and new M-League logo launch yesterday.
