Brunei keep duo and start search for third foreigner

PETALING JAYA: Brunei DPMM have retained Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Tosi and Croatian defender Rene Komar for their debut in the Super League, which begins in December.

Team manager Pengiran Waslimin said that they were looking for a third foreigner, a striker, to beef up the squad, who won promotion from the Premier League to the top flight via the playoffs.

“We have retained 70% of the players for this year’s team. Our target is to finish among the top five in the Super League. Naturally, we need to strengthen the team in defence and attack,” said Pengiran Waslimin from Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday.

This year, Brunei qualified for the Malaysia Cup competition for the first time since 2000 and made it to the quarter-finals.

“It has been six years since the team made it to the Malaysia Cup competition and this can be considered a real achievement for my boys. We have made it to the Super League and we do not want to be a one-season wonder,” said Waslimin.

Brunei, who won the Malaysia Cup for the first time in 1999, have turned out to be a hard nut to crack at home this year. In the Premier League, the team under Croatian coach Buteka Ranko, lost only two of their 11 matches.

The new Super League will feature 13 teams following the exit of Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ). The Premier League, which had two groups of eight teams each, will now involve a single group of 11 teams.

The format of competition will be on a home-and-away basis instead of three rounds previously.
