WELLINGTON: The world's top golfer Tiger Woods proved his super-competitive spirit isn't confined to the fairways and greens yesterday when he won a celebrity stock car race in New Zealand.
Woods' insurers must have breathed a sigh of relief after he emerged unscathed after three collision-packed races, which came a day after Woods and his local caddy Steve Williams twice took the plunge on New Zealand's highest bungee jump.
The 10-time major winner took a pounding in the first race at the Huntly speedway south of Auckland, before his team mates blocked the rival team's cars to give Woods a clear run for the chequered flag in the second.
Rival team captain, former New Zealand rugby skipper Tana Umaga, suggested a third unscheduled race be added to decide the matter.
Someone's got to win so we're going to race one more time, Woods agreed.
But the world No. 1 had to make do with second after Umaga's team took the decider.
The races to raise money for a sports charity run by part-time car racer Williams saw two teams of five cars clash for supremacy on the dirt track.
On Sunday, Woods twice took a 135m bungee jump including an 8.5sec free fall from a cable car over the Nevis Valley near Queenstown.
Woods is taking time out from the Tour while his father Earl is ill with cancer. AFP
